ABOUT GAYS, LESBIANS, AND BISEXUALS
After years of hard campaigning, transgendered persons are now grouped with gays, lesbians, and bisexuals in a collective called the GLBT community. All GLBT persons are discriminated against and in some way denied their basic civil rights. Homophobia and trans-phobia both have their roots in the unreasonable enforcement of gender stereotypes. Unlike most GLB persons, transgendered persons are physically marked and must often resort to surgery to reduce the markers.
Being transgendered is about gender identity, presentation, and expression. Gender orientation is different from sexual (affectional) orientation. Transgendered persons may also be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or asexual–though more ambiguously than non-transgendered persons, since presentation or transition can alter implied sexual orientation.
